The Science Behind Ultrasonic + UVC Cleaning
Why we created the Sonic Dental Technical White Paper
Cleaning an aligner, retainer, denture or mouthguard sounds simple. But removable dental appliances are exposed every day to bacteria, biofilm, food debris and staining - often in small grooves and recessed areas that are difficult to clean effectively.
At Sonic Dental, we wanted to go beyond simply saying that ultrasonic cleaning works.
So we brought together the available evidence.
Our 2026 Technical White Paper, The Science of Ultrasonic and UVC Cleaning, reviews the science behind modern appliance cleaning and brings together four complementary evidence streams:
- Published peer-reviewed research
- Sonic Dental manufacturer engineering testing
- Independent accredited laboratory testing
- Feedback from UK dental professionals
The aim was simple: understand what different cleaning methods actually do, where their limitations lie, and why ultrasonic cleaning and UVC work particularly well together.
Why Ultrasonic Cleaning?
Ultrasonic cleaning works through cavitation.
High-frequency sound waves create microscopic bubbles in the water. As those bubbles collapse, they release localised energy that helps lift deposits from the appliance surface.
Because this happens throughout the cleaning bath, ultrasonic energy can reach grooves, recesses and internal surfaces that are difficult to access with a toothbrush.
Why Add UVC?
Ultrasonic cleaning is a mechanical cleaning technology. UVC provides a separate antimicrobial mechanism.
The Sonic Pro combines 42 kHz ultrasonic cavitation with simultaneous UVC, allowing both technologies to operate during the same cleaning cycle.
The white paper examines why these two mechanisms complement one another, while also looking at the limitations of traditional approaches including water rinsing, brushing and cleaning tablets.
What Did the Evidence Show?
The findings across the different evidence streams were encouraging.
Published research supports ultrasonic cleaning for removing deposits and disrupting biofilm.
Manufacturer engineering testing of the Sonic Pro recorded effective cleaning in recessed areas, broad and stable cavitation and high measurable UVC output.
Independent laboratory testing recorded microbial reductions of 99.96% or greater against four representative microorganisms under defined laboratory conditions.
Taken together, the evidence supports ultrasonic cleaning combined with UVC as the most comprehensive approach to removable appliance hygiene evaluated in our review.
